Howdy. I started keeping an eye on SubStack when a couple of former writing students started posting here. It continues to be interesting, and there's a wide variety of folk posting,. I followed you for the art, mostly, but I'm interested in the words, too. Plus, I like stories and thoughts from NYC. It's cool place.
Great intro! (for a first time reader ever to a blog/someone aspiring to be a blog writer)
"It can even feel dehumanizing." how do you mean? it would be interesting to read about your personal experiences - or would greatly appreciate if you can elaborate?
Also agree on the meanings you put forward about art, how else should we repurpose art?
Hi Serdar. So happy to have you, welcome to the newsletter!
For me, it can feel dehumanizing when the only way I can make an income is through drawing other people's ideas that I don't relate to. It makes me feel like a drawing machine. The only reason I've drawn my whole life is because I have something to say-- ideas I want to express. When I'm drawing for other people's ideas it feel empty.
Interesting question about how to repurpose art. Now I'm curious for your elaboration. I love art as a form of communication. I feel like this definition is so broad that it could be a lot of things.
Perhaps art can be anything, depending on your perspective. Much like love, hate - art can be many things for so many different people. For me it is almost like a sentiment, or a smell sometimes or just following signs and discovering something new. I suppose it is much easier to repurpose something once I feel the true essence/see the truth behind it.
Hi Denise! Thanks for being here and nice to meet you through text. I hope you enjoy silly cartoons because you're about to get more in your inbox soon!
They've rejected some of my best single panel ideas, so I feel ya! They are very particular for sure. I keep hoping they'll use one of my cartoons for a caption contest, which is like... a half-rejection because they don't like your caption enough to keep it, but it would be fun to be chosen for it regardless. Thanks for the feedback, Mitchell! I will definitely be sharing slice-of-life comics-- fortunately, this is my bread and butter. Yumyumyum.
Omg yes, Pat! We live! I refrained from over-sharing in this post, but I was going to say I also missed tinkering with the html and making my page excessively personalized. I haven't been able to find such lax html play options on Substack so far, but it's okay, I prefer the writing and drawing more anyway. Welcome btw!

Thanks for sharing R.!
Glad to hear you came for the art because there are many more goofy drawings to come.
