Do you also struggle to feel like you have anything “worth” sharing?

Yes- as a writer I have recently started writing (poetry) only for myself and love that freedom- I have given myself a year before I have to share at my local. The writing I do for my blog often feels less than worthy but is more functional so I just do it and have to be okay that its not quite worthy.

Do you set aside time to be creative (or wish you did)?

I have started to and its essential for my sanity and wellbeing. I notice weeks when I have not set aside time or enough time and it detracts from every part of the rest of my life.

Should I draw for fun after finishing the post?

why not?

But what should I draw?! *panic sets in*

in poetry prompts help me so much- I have some left over from A month if prompts in May but then also found a random photograph of my daughter holding a newspaper up from an art exhibit at Mass MoCA that said: Not so much a thing but the way things happen. - which I think is a good prompt to. Do visual artists use prompts?

Hi Leah! I love writing for just myself, it's so freeing and therapeutic.

I have this sneaking suspicion that we're never going to feel like our art is ever fully "worthy", so thank goodness for having the perseverance to push through anyway!

I try to think about how much writing/ art I adore that may have never been shared if not for the creator pushing through their self-doubt.

Yessssss, hard agree! Setting aside creative time is fully a practice of wellbeing and self-care.

I'm often suspicious of the self-care discourse always seeming to revolve around buying things when setting aside time to write or draw feel so much more powerful to me.

It's self-discovery!

I love the visual you shared of your daughter holding a newspaper at MoCa. It reminds me of my husband's favorite painting by Gerhard Richter called "Lesende" ("Reader").

Your prompt did remind me that I've painted my own photographs in the past (which is what Richter did in this piece), which would have actually been an excellent source for painting! I'll need to remember to come back to that. I've done it before and it's come out really well.

Visual artists definitely can use prompts. I honestly should more often!

I draw every day just in case I become famous like Joan of Arc or Ed McMahon and people need stuff to hang up on a wall in a museum. “What’s up with this dude?” Visitors will ask. Just in case...That’s what makes it all fun! So, what up on the wall at the Erika Sjule Museum 500 years from now?

OoooOooooo, I love this idea, John!

I think I considered such an idea once-- That since my work is predominantly digital I could never have my originals up on display somewhere, someday. It felt a little disheartening.

This also inspires me to ever attempt to work on a larger scale. Large scale paintings always feel so exciting to me and what a bold aspiration!

MMmmmm.... now I need this for my future self.

Thank you for sharing this idea with me, John!

Also congrats on drawing every day!

I know that's no small feat. I struggle to draw daily myself!

I saw the cartoon online, saw your name and went, "I (sort of) KNOW HER!" Then I was all, "who's Pheobe Bridgers?" 😆

Hi Scott-- You do know me! (sort of) lol.

I'm so glad you saw the cartoon online! That makes me feel cool. 😎

Haha, I definitely think the reference was a little niche.

I eagerly shared the cartoon with my parents the second it published and they were like, "that's so great sweetie, but uh... what?" Hahaha.

That is the nicest way of saying, "ok Boomer" that I think I've ever heard 😂 (though I'm actually GenX but whatever). Congrats on the cartoon! Here's to many more!

I'm a cusper to Gen X! An elder millennial as they say.

Honestly I feel old as a Phoebe Bridgers fan. I'm definitely going to be that 40 year old at a concert full of 20 year olds, but I like to live life on the edge like that! hahaha

Haha, set aside time to eat, I like that Mitchell.

It feels very accurate to how essential it is to allow ourselves the space to create.

It's human health!

Draw "Upon Your Reserves" is an incredibly interesting prompt. I'm going to doodle this idea on this lovely Saturday and see where it takes me-- thank you for the idea!

Awww! I love this, Lynn!

Especially shocked that you listened to this Liz Phair song so recently. I just discovered it myself and I friiiggginnnnn loveeeee ittt.

Do you have any favorite Liz Phair songs? I'm just discovering her as an artist in general.

I love to hear that you saw my cartoon last week! <3

The Phoebe Bridgers thing is so funny to me. It just kept escalating, like every indie band I loved would release a new album and-- BAM-- Phoebe track. Haha.
