Remember 2023?
It feels like forever ago.
*Studies daguerreotype of myself from yesterday*
So here we are again.
Getting slapped in the face with yet another “New Year”.
But, ya know— a slap isn’t always a bad thing…?
Sometimes we need to be slapped out of a reverie.
Remember how Covid slapped us all out of the collective delusion that workaholism was an admirable personality trait?
Oh what simple little pawns we were.
Life can be such a blur, it’s easy to forget that:
But on a more earnest note:
Ok, ok, sorry, sorry, I swear, I’m going somewhere with this…
I really do appreciate that New Years gives us all a chance to reflect on our lives.
It can be hard to remember to reflect.
If anything we’re very much trained to do the opposite.
And that is a recipe for getting stuck and feeling like garbage.
I’m sharing drawings from my 2020 sketchbook for this Sketchbook Exposé, because like many people, 2020 really shocked me into a forced reflection.
A reckoning you could say.
And in honor of reflection I’m putting together some 2023 reflection questions for y’all to answer (if so interested).
I usually end my posts with a list of comment prompts, so this will serve a dual purpose!
Oooooo, ahhhhhhh. So efficientttttt.
I’ll get us started by bearing my cheesy soul first:
🎊My 2023🎊
What are you most proud of when reflecting on 2023?
I’m really proud of the collaborations I’ve worked on this year.
It was a goal of mine to seek out collaborations last year because cartooning and writing can be very isolating.
I can be quite socially anxious and introverted, so I’ve worked in isolation for a long time out of fear.
And it’s been so nice to feel creatively connected with others, it’s reminded me how much joy can come from collaboration.
What risks did you take that you’re glad you took?
Going to St. Nell’s Humor Residency and The New Yorker party last February!
I had ample self-doubt about both of these, but I ended up meeting more wonderful silly artists than I could have ever dreamed of.
What are three words to describe how you saw yourself in 2023 and three words to describe how you hope to be in 2024?
Scared, brave, trying
Adventurous, open-minded, self-compassionate
How will I try to show up more for myself in 2024 than I did in 2023?
Since I’m a new mom in 2024 I have to say I hope to be gentle with myself in regard to having a lower creative output. I hope to remind myself that I am more than my art and it’s okay to lean into whatever new version of myself emerges in 2024.
How much wood would a woodchuck fuck if a wood chuck could fuck wood?
Wow, excellent question, me.
I’m going to go with 47, but don’t quote me on that!
Questions! (To copy and paste)
